Bio
The elegant Nephthys is the Goddess of Darkness and a member of the Ennead (The Nine), a collection of the most powerful deities in Egypt. This is perhaps not surprising, as she is one of the sacred children of Nut (Sky Goddess) and Geb (Earth God) along with her twin sister, Iset, and two brothers: Osiris and Set. Although she looks very similar to her sister, she can be differentiated by her golden cup on her head, symbolizing her holding heavenly air (aether), and her distinct clothing style… Nephthys most often wears sashes of linen over her body, much like those used for mummification.
It is difficult to describe Nephthys without counterbalancing her with Iset. The two are often considered to be mirror images of one another but perhaps are better described as two sides of the same coin… However, while just as beautiful and just as capable with magic as is her sister, she doesn’t share her universal adoration. Perhaps this is because she is associated with death, decay, and mourning… However, this association was only the result of her critical role to guide and guard the dead while they transition into the afterlife.
Another critical role that she performs is to help the Sun-God, Ra, during his procession around the realm. Nephthys meets him during the dim light of dusk when he enters the underworld at the western mountains. After he enters, she helps to cleanse his solar barge with purifying fires, removing the corruption from Earth, and then helps to protect Ra through the hour-long stages of the underworld, including helping to fight off Apophis, the monstrous snake that tries to eat him every night! After Ra makes it through the abyss, he will be greeted on the other side by Iset where she, conversely, will help guide him through the heavens. As Iset helps to ascend, Nephthys helps to descend. Again, two sides of the same coin… but both are critical to the cycle of life and death.
