Bio
Mighty Dangun’s story began when his grandfather Hwanin (Heavenly Emperor) noticed his son, Hwanung (Supreme Regent), was intensely interested in Earth. Soon, Hwanung took his father’s blessing with three Celestial Stamps to descend to the world with 3000 courtiers and settled on the top of Mount Taebaek. Here, he became king and made the Gods of wind, rain, and clouds the governors of this new realm.
One day, a tiger and bear came to visit Hwanung’s kingdom and asked to be made into human beings. He told the animals that if they could survive inside of his cave for 100 days – only eating the sacred foods of garlic and mugwort – they could be humans… After 30 days the tiger, sick and hungry, gave up and left. However, the bear endured and on the 100th day became a woman. This woman and Hwanung eventually had a child, named Dangun Wanggeom, and this golden child soon began the holy city of Asadal where people lived long, fruitful lives, followed just laws, and understood the difference between good and evil.
This city on the mountaintop eventually expanded to become an empire known as the Gojoseon Dynasty, which was founded on four principles: Hongik Ingan, meaning “benefit mankind widely”; Jaese Ihwa, meaning “let truth endure”; I do Yeochi meaning “calm the world with reason”; and Gwangmyeong Ise, meaning “illuminate the way with wisdom.” To enact these ideals, the God of Wind coordinated an equitable political system. While the God of Rain directed educational administration and strengthened the people’s’ connection with the spiritual, and the God of Clouds took responsibility for the legal and military structures.
According to legend, Dangun led this dynasty for 1,500 years. Under his leadership, the Gojoseon people developed a sophisticated and prosperous society, which endeavored to find a balance between Heaven, Earth, and humankind.
